The New York Fire Department is mourning the loss of one of its members, a Hispanic-born paramedic who was run over and then dragged by her own ambulance at the hands of an apparently drugged subject who, according to sources, has a long history criminal.

According to a press release from the New York police, Yadira Arroyo, 44, with 14 years on duty, was with her ambulance partner, Monique Williams, 31, circulating on Thursday streets from the Bronx when a guy signaled for them to stop because someone was riding in the back of the ambulance.

The women parked and suddenly the guy got into the ambulance, knocking Arroyo down on the street. Putting the vehicle in reverse, it passed over the woman. The maneuver hit other cars and a parked patrol, and when he started it forward he dragged the body of the paramedic.

Arroyo was taken to the Jacobi Medical Center, where she lost her life due to the serious injuries caused by the accident. Her partner was also admitted with a broken shoulder and several injuries.

Arroyo's fiancé met her at the hospital, where she remained by her side until her death. The woman, who leaves five children between the ages of 24 and 7 behind her, is remembered by friends and acquaintances as an "angel."

"She didn't mind working 20-hour shifts if she had to," 24-year-old Monica Salazar, who is engaged to the victim's brother, told the New York Daily News. "This is what she worked for and loved doing her job."

The subject who ran her over, also of Hispanic origin, who responds to the name of José González, was apprehended by a security element of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority that was on duty in the area, according to the same newspaper.
