Thieves broke into Thoiry Zoo on the outskirts of Paris on Monday, with the intention of stealing the valuable ivory horn from one of its three African rhinos.
According to the newspaper Le Parisien, the bandits tried to take the horn of the animal called Vince "probably cutting it with an electric saw", but ended up killing him with three shots to the head.
In the zoo there were two other African rhinos, Gracie and Bruno, who fortunately were saved. "The assailants may not have had time to [attack] the other animals," a police spokesman told the French newspaper.
Crime, which has caused outrage in France. It was discovered by the park keeper, who are "severely affected" by what happened.
The French Minister of the Environment, Ségolène Royal, described the death of the rhino as a “criminal” act and called on all nations to ban the ivory trade to prevent hunting of this mammal and elephants.
A rhino horn can fetch between $ 31,000 and $ 42,000 on the black market, particularly because of the belief in some Asian countries that it has aphrodisiac properties.
