After three women were expelled from an Argentine beach for being topless, hundreds of their compatriots claimed the right to show the torso in public with a protest in downtown Buenos Aires that was dubbed El Tetazo.

“We claim our right to decide on our body. The claim is not only for topless but there is a whole background of inequality between men and women, shared a young protester in statements collected by the Spanish newspaper El País.

The well-known Obelisk in the Argentine capital was the meeting place for the protesters, who expressed their discontent with the law that prohibits women from displaying their breasts, even on a beach, as it is considered an "act against morals."

Under that law, the three bathers were admonished on the beach of the coastal city of Necochea, where after being semi-naked showing their breasts, around 20 policemen forced them to withdraw from the place after refusing to cover themselves.

As a result of that incident, there have been several protests demanding that women have the same right as men to display their naked torso.

In addition to Buenos Aires, there have been demonstrations in various parts of the country, such as the cities of Corrientes and Formosa or the Malvinas Argentinas beach on the banks of the Paraná.

The mayor of Necochea, Facundo López, supported the demand of women, although I consider that there was an excess of protests.

“We all know that it is a contravention, but it is not a serious enough event to provoke everything that was generated around it. The law is obsolete, I am ready for it to be modernized. It is necessary to have an open mind”, López shared.
