Old Man Shot Dead Wearing Only A Crucifix

Last December 12, a California police officer shot and killed a 73-year-old man with senile dementia. Police reportedly received a call that allegedly alerted them to a gunman in Bakersfield. When the police arrived they found the old Francisco Serna in front of a house and shot him.

Today it was revealed on the BBC portal that Serna was only carrying a crucifix. According to reports from the authorities, the man refused to take his hands out of his pockets, which led the police to shoot him. "It is difficult to accept that our father's life ended brutally, abruptly and with excessive violence," the family said in a statement read aloud during a candlelight vigil at their home on Tuesday night. "We feel that our father was stolen from us at a time when our family should be celebrating the holidays, birthdays, and making happy family memories."

Serna died after taking 5 shots. Bakersfield Police Chief Lyle Martin stated that the object found in Mr. Serna's pocket was difficult to describe. The police had already been alerted to alleged attacks that Serna had made to residents of the area.

According to his family, Serna suffered from the early stages of dementia, and that is why the police had visited his house recently, since he would have activated a medical alarm, but never due to acts of violence.
