An Indiana man accused of murdering his wife with a gunshot allegedly recorded the last moments of the woman's life on his cell phone, People reports.

Lafayette, Indiana resident Patrick Elliott, 50, faces murder charges, providing false information to authorities, and using a firearm in connection with a shot that killed his wife, Donita Elliott, 47, exposes the story.

Tippecanoe County Sheriff Barry Richard informed People that Elliot's cell phone audio recorder was activated during the incident. However, the officer said it is unknown why it happened. Making guesses, "would be to speculate."

According to the papers of the accusation against Elliot, obtained by the magazine, the recording includes audio of the moment before, during and after the altercation between the marriage. Such documentation contradicts Elliot's allegations, who claimed that he shot his wife in self-defense.

The version Elliot offered said that his wife Donita had used a knife to attack him. This does not appear to be in the audio the police have obtained.

On August 7 - the day before the woman's death - police arrived at the couple's residence at around 6 p.m., after a domestic fight was reported and they remained at the scene for two hours. Donita left the residence. However, the next day - August 8 - Patrick Elliot called the police. Upon reaching the house, they found Donita's lifeless body on the floor. An autopsy determined that Donita died of a gunshot wound to the chest.
