After growing up surrounded and in love with the wedding and party dresses her grandmother sewed, the Mexican designer Alexia María began designing a dress for herself to attend a wedding and soon her style became “viral” among her friends and her family who wanted to copy her look. We talked to the dressmaker about how she went from making clothes for her intimates to selling her dresses in prestigious stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and dressing the crème de la crème in Manhattan.
“When I designed several dresses I realized that [this] was my thing. I studied finance, but I liked the fact of combining creativity with business, "she recalls of her beginnings.
"My style is very classic, feminine and at the same time with a modern touch", says the Mexican about her inspirations that mainly drink from the style of the 50s. With a more personal and contemporary touch, yes. Impossible not to think of the great divas of the most classic Hollywood like Liz Taylor or Audrey Hepburn when you see their designs.
With the permission of the black and white that are always in their collections, their color palette is cheerful and very bright, always favoring monochrome looks over the print.
Bows, classic silhouettes, large volumes and some novelties that make theirs more modern and versatile proposals, such as the "convertible" collection that he presented to us in his atelier.
These are pieces that work together and separately so that each one combines according to its mood or the style of the event it is going to attend. Like this red jumpsuit that can be combined with a skirt-tail to give a more nightly and festive point to the look. A combination, by the way, that we are seeing a lot of celebrities on the red carpet this season.
Follow closely in the footsteps of this brave Mexican entrepreneur who is already dressing socialites and actresses like Madelaine Petsch, from Riverdale (Netflix), or Gillian Anderson, the protagonist of Love (Netflix).
