Former Miss Universe Alicia Machado has been one of the stars of the entertainment world who has joined the new This Shirt Saves Lives campaign launched by St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
The name of the multifaceted Venezuelan star was also joined by other great artists such as Luis Fonsi, Elizabeth Gutiérrez, Gaby Espino, Pamela Silva Conde, Johnny Lozada, Vadhir Derbez and Rosie Rivera.
The goal of this campaign is to invite people to join the donor network and receive a commemorative T-shirt from the renowned hospital, which helps children across the country free of charge in their fight against cancer.
During the launch event of the St. Jude initiative. People en Español had the opportunity to speak exclusively with Alicia, who also arrived very well accompanied by her 10-year-old daughter Dinorah. Look what he told us:
How do you feel about being part of this campaign?
I love it, I've spent many years trying to support St. Jude in different ways. When I lived in Miami we did some activities and personally I have many stories of cancer around me, even I had an unpleasant episode for me in 2013, which thank God was a wake up call. But sometimes it is not necessary to live this reality so that your heart is sensitized… Helping in different ways is something that is part of my career.
I fully understand what St. Jude does, it is a very large organization that really helps children. People in St. Jude don't pay a penny… thanks to donations, to people who touch their hearts and share.
Is it special to you that your daughter has joined this campaign?
I've always (instilled) him since I was little that we have to help. God gave me the opportunity to be famous and the best thing about fame is the opportunity to have a voice and to help others.
How do you feel when your daughter wants to help other children?
I am very grateful to God to have Dinorah in my life, she is a girl who has brought me many lessons, every day she teaches me things. My daughter is a very healthy girl, since she was born and I thank her for helping other people who do not suffer the same fate.
I try to instill in her that she values that not all children are like her. Not everyone has the nice things that she has. I think she values all those things and knows that there are people who are not as lucky as her. These things are seen since childhood. Raising a child is like planting, you throw away the seed and expect it to be a great tree. I know these little things that will sink into her heart and I know that they will make her a good and admirable woman. I know she will be a great woman with a great heart.
