Jeannette Torres has a new baby and it's called Being a Mom (Penguin Random House), a book for mothers who want to have a balance in their lives. In an exclusive talk with People in Spanish, the Puerto Rican gave details about this work in which her oldest daughter and sister Dayanara Torres participate.
Tell us about your new baby
Three years ago I wanted to write this book and obviously as a result of how one runs [in] the day to day and the children and the work I could not do it. It was hard work, but with a lot of love, it took me about six months. Why do I say it is my baby? Because when you put so much energy into it, so much desire is wonderful.
Dedicated to moms …
It is for them, because what motivated me to write this book was my own life. I think that the woman of the 21st century has some very different challenges from the challenges my mother lived through. We have fought for so many years for equality, we have grown professionally, we already have a university, a profession, sometimes we even have better positions, which we never thought the woman would have. Obviously, all these advances that are beneficial for women carry many challenges, because we never stop being the mother of the house.
You talk about balance …
The balance becomes so difficult [to] find and in many occasions we have the seed that they put in our heads 'if you are mom, then you are the last' and even [when] we take time for ourselves we feel bad and it feels guilt. The goal of the book is to help mothers recognize how powerful we are, how strong we are and give us space, and give us this permission not to forget us for having been moms.
Never step aside
You don't have to put your life aside to be a good mom, quite the contrary. My sister Dayanara wrote me the prologue and the girl wrote me the epilogue, she did not know what she had written until she gave it to me. When I read it, for me it was the biggest gain of everything I have done in my life, she, [my daughter], talks about how proud she is of me so much that I work and for not having stopped fighting for me I dream of writing my book. I want my daughter to have a seed, it is necessary to take time for yourself, read a book, have a coffee with a friend, and I do not exclude my son because the day he has a partner, I want him to recognize the space of that couple and of the benefit that entails for all family life.
