Multiple occurrences of the spirit of a dead man in her Manhattan apartment caused the author and survivor of sarcoma - a rare tissue cancer - Zulema Arroyo Farley to come out of the closet and reveal to her husband her psychic abilities to communicate with loved ones who left this world. "We all need a guide," says the 45-year-old Puerto Rican, who today calls herself The Latin Medium and has done television readings on shows like Despierta América (Univision). "This is not a negative thing."

When did you realize you had that gift? I've always known since childhood. My mom tells me that she had imaginary friends at 5 years old. All my life I have had thoughts of things that are going to happen.

Why did you come out of the closet as a medium now? I couldn't control it anymore, it was causing anxiety. Not the sarcoma issue, but all the autoimmune diseases I have probably have some kind of relationship [with] having endured [without saying anything] that long [time].

Were you afraid to say it? No, the reason I didn't say it is because I had to learn how to use my gift.

How has your family taken it? [My mom and my sister] terrible. They don't want [to have] anything to do with it.

What do you mean when you say that you are a medium? We all need someone to help us spiritually. People do not know that our loved ones guide us and are with us.

What would you say to people who don't believe? I don't worry or waste my energy on people who don't believe. It is good that there is a little skepticism in people who come to have a reading because that helps them have a better experience. The work is done by loved ones.

How long does a session last? Reading is 45 minutes to an hour.

How much do you charge per session? It is not a business as people think, I have to pay an office, [to be] in a safe place because I am seeing people that I do not know. But I do not charge like other mediums, I charge, that people can witness everything I have fought for chemotherapy for this cancer, to save lives. It is what I want to do with the money.
