A Father Jumps Before A Train With His 5-year-old Daughter

Passengers who crowded into the station in the Bronx of the New York subway watched in horror this Monday morning as a father threw himself onto the train tracks with his 5-year-old daughter, who was carrying a school bag on her back.

In what authorities describe as an apparent suicide, the 45-year-old man jumped, grabbing his daughter in his arms in front of a subway line 4 convoy that was arriving at Kingsbridge Road station at about 8 a.m.

“About 20, 30 people yelled [at the train operator and signaled him to stop],” Jennifer Hub, who was returning home after accompanying her children to school, told the New York Post. "I saw the train coming round the curve and that man jump and I saw small feet peeking out."

Even though the driver applied the brakes, the train passed over the father and daughter. The man died at the same scene, while his daughter was miraculously rescued from under the train by good Samaritans who jumped onto the tracks.

A dramatic video of the moment shows how they extract the girl, still with her backpack on her back, amid the expressions of shock and relief of those present.

"My theory is that the girl was under the train and she is small enough that she was able to turn around [and stay between the rails] because she only suffered a few scratches on her forehead and arm," Hub added in his statements to the Post.

The little girl was immediately transferred to a nearby hospital where she was reunited with her mother, according to several local media. So far the authorities have not determined the reason that led the father to jump.

A similar incident also occurred at a station in the Bronx on New York City Subway Line 4 last June, when a homeless mother apparently jumped on a train with her two-month-old daughter. Fortunately, they were both right in the gap between the tracks and the convoy went over them causing only scratches.
