Andreas Erazo, 20, pleaded guilty to the first-degree murder and first-degree aggravated sexual assault of Abbiegail "Abbie" Smith, whose body was found on July 13, 2017, just hours after she was reported missing from his apartment on Hancock Street in Keansburg.
According to information from People magazine, Erazo's trial will begin next week. Under the guilty plea agreement, prosecutors will recommend that Erazo serve a life sentence in prison, which would require him to serve 63 years before being eligible for parole. After his release, he would have to register as a sex offender and be on probation for the rest of his life.
Police immediately launched the investigation of a missing person after Abbie was reported missing around 9 pm July 12, 2017. The next morning, around 10:20 am, investigators searched behind the apartment complex. near Erazo's residence when they saw an object wrapped in a blanket or quilt in an eaves, according to a prosecutor press release.
Upon closer inspection, the body was found to be from Abbie. According to NBC, a knife was found in Erazo's apartment and blood stains were discovered on her windowsill. He was charged on March 13.
An autopsy determined that Abbie had been sexually assaulted and stabbed.
After her death, people who knew Abbie praised the 11-year-old girl, CBS New York reported.
