Is the popular Barbie doll against gender stereotypes? That ensures its manufacturer, the toy company Mattel, which recently announced that Barbie will fight against sexist stereotypes.
Barbie will join the program called Dream Gap or "the gap of dreams" that seeks to eliminate "factors that prevent girls from reaching their full potential," the company reported. Mattel launched the iconic doll in 1959 and was originally thin-haired and platinum-haired.
Over time, Barbie has evolved to adapt to a more modern and inclusive society. The doll has become more racially diverse and Barbies from all walks of life have been launched to encourage female independence. Other manufacturers have also released more voluptuous dolls to compete with this plastic heroine.
"Cultural stereotypes, implicit prejudices and representation in the media influenced the promotion of this issue," added Mattel.
"The goal of 'Dream Gap' is to leverage Barbie's global platforms to educate society on gender bias and inspire anyone who supports this cause to join us as we cannot do it alone."
