A Dominican resident in Spain for decades is the main suspect in the death by strangling an 8-year-old boy whose disappearance has shocked Spain.

Gabriel Cruz, or Pescaíto, as everyone in the European nation now calls him, was last seen on February 27 when he left his grandmother's house, in the town of Hortichuelas, municipality of Híjar, in Almería. The boy was going to play with his little cousins but never reached his destination.

Since then his search has become the topic of the day in Spain. Even on social networks, the inquiries were followed up with the hashtag #pescaitogabriel.

Unfortunately, this weekend the boy's father's girlfriend, Ana Julia Quezada, originally from the Dominican Republic, was arrested after being caught on a farm extracting the child's lifeless body from a well. The discovery was made on the property of the boy's father's family, Ángel Cruz, and now the woman has been detained on suspicion of being the author of the boy's murder.

According to the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, in his desperate attempts to hide his crime, Quezada traveled about 45 miles to the town of Puebla de Vicar - where he lived with the father of the son - with the body in the trunk of his car. When she got home and after entering the garage, she was apprehended by the Civil Guard, who found the child's body wrapped in blankets.

The most shocking thing about the case is that the 43-year-old Quisqueyan had been seen in different public demonstrations next to the boy's father asking for help to locate him. Tearfully, and even wearing a T-shirt bearing Gabriel's image, the woman gave interviews to various media and grabbed headlines while the case was investigated.

An interview that the woman granted talking about the disappearance of the minor:

According to the autopsy carried out by experts from the Institute of Legal Medicine of Almería, it was determined that the minor died the same day of his disappearance and that he was strangled. The body also presented blows, but it is not yet determined if these were given to the child before or after his death.

After the discovery of the body, Felipe VI, King of Spain, paid a minute of silence in honor of little Gabriel. For his part, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy sent his condolences to the family who was watching the boy on Monday at the Provincial Palace of the Almería Provincial Council.
