Former baseball player Esteban Loaiza, the last husband of the late singer Jenni Rivera, will learn Wednesday in a California court of the charges against him after being arrested last week.

Loaiza, 46, was arrested last Friday afternoon in San Diego after 44 pounds of heroin and cocaine were in his possession, according to local authorities.

While Loaiza awaits her hearing, new details of her arrest have been released, which she said was the result of an investigation that had been underway for some time.

This was revealed by the investigators involved in the case to the Associated Press, who did not specify how the successful ex-baseball player of the Boston Red Sox had been related to the investigation.

According to the San Diego sheriff's office, the operation tracked a half-million dollar drug sale and purchase transaction.

Esteban Loaiza and Jenni Rivera were married for two years. Before her death in 2012, she filed for divorce:

For his part, John Boggs, a former Loaiza manager during his major league baseball career, said he hadn't seen his former client in over a year. However, he confessed that he had heard from third parties that Loaiza was involved in a hat business made in Mexico.

"I love Esteban a lot, he's a great guy," Boggs told the San Diego Union Tribune newspaper. “But I repeat: I don't know what or why he has been involved in this. I have no idea. He is my friend and I am very sorry for what is happening.”

Loaiza is the second-highest-winning Mexican baseball pitcher in the professional baseball league (MLB) and played for eight different teams, earning as much as $ 43 million, with his last team being the Red Sox Boston.

The suspect remains in custody at the Chula Vista Bay Detention Center on $ 200,000 bail. It is unknown whether or not he has a legal representative.
