Authorities arrested an Ohio man accused of raping and murdering his girlfriend's 13-month-old daughter, according to TIME.

Joshua Gurto, 37, a fugitive, had a knife in his backpack when he was arrested in Pennsylvania on Friday, three weeks after he allegedly killed the baby before fleeing.

According to the magazine, the defendant was recognized by a police officer in a forested area of Pittsburgh early Friday morning, according to Michael Colby, a spokesman for the Conneaut, Ohio, police department, the town where the crime was committed.

According to his version, the agent ordered the fugitive to drop to the ground when he recognized him. Gurto did not resist arrest and identified himself before being arrested.

Among his belongings were a knife, a field house and maps of both Pennsylvania and New Jersey, said Northern Ohio District Police Chief Pete Elliott.

He also indicated that the baby who was killed, Sereniti Jazzlyn-Sky Blankenship-Sutley, was "brutally beaten."

The 13-month-old girl received a blow to the head and lower body on October 7, according to Elliott. The murdered little girl was the daughter of Kelsie Blankenship, Gurto's girlfriend, he added.

"I feel very bad about the Sereniti family," said Elliott.
