After the earthquake that has shaken Mexico, many anonymous heroes have appeared, including four-legged ones. They are the search and rescue dogs in charge of sneaking first among the rubble to locate survivors.
Their developed sense of smell allows them to find both people who are trapped alive and those who have already perished.
The rescue and search team of the Mexican Navy secretariat has put three of its members to work in this catastrophe, Frida, Evil and Eco, who have been trained in the canine section of the High Command Headquarters.
Other specialized dogs from other countries have joined their work.
These very particular rescuers have special equipment made up of booties, so as not to hurt their leg bearings, and visors to protect their eyes from smoke, dust and toxic substances that may be found during their searches. They also have a harness in case they must descend to the destroyed area.
To become rescue dogs, canines are selected based on a series of requirements that allow their training, such as a great sense of smell, bravery, security, agility and autonomy. It is also essential that they have developed hunting, prey and search instincts.
Without complying with the above, any breed is suitable regardless of size, although they must have long fur to withstand weather conditions. The most common for this type of work are the German Shepherd, Belgian Shepherd Malinois, Belgian Shepherd Tervueren, Boorder Collie, Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever or the Spanish Spaniel, among others.
Its training begins in the first months of life and lasts between 14 and 20 months. In that time they must create a binomial with the agent in charge.
Undoubtedly these animals also deserve to be recognized for their valuable work.
