An Iowa woman admitted that she attempted to kill her newborn son through the hospital toilet before throwing him into a trash can, where the infant was found alive.

According to Johnson County information, Ashley Hautzenrader, 24, pleaded guilty to the crimes of threatening the life of an infant and neglecting a dependent. The young woman initially faced murder charges, however, authorities reduced the charges.

Hautzenrader was arrested in May 2016 after her newborn son was discovered by staff at the University of Iowa Hospital.

Back then, the woman told the police that she gave birth to the boy but since she did not cry, she thought he was dead and that is why she tried to flush him down the toilet, but since it did not work, she then put him in a pillowcase and threw it in the trash and then ran away. She supposedly didn't know she was pregnant the moment she entered the bathroom. "Although she was in a hospital, she did not tell anyone of the baby's birth and never sought help to examine, try to revive, or care for the child," documents obtained by People magazine indicate.

Hautzenrader's trial took place last Tuesday. The tentative date for sentencing will be September 1. The woman could face up to 12 years in prison.
