A small town northeast of Atlanta, Georgia, has been shaken by a terrible crime in which 4 children and a man died, all apparently at the hands of his own mother and wife.

The events occurred last Thursday in the town of Loganville, located in Gwinett County. According to police reports obtained by People, at 4:45 am a distress call was received indicating that 4 small children and a man had been stabbed to death. "Fortunately, they found one more child who was still alive [and] suffering from his serious condition," authorities told People in a statement. The current condition of the boy, whose name was not released and who was transferred to a nearby hospital, is unknown.

According to reports from the WSB-TV Atlanta television station, the woman - whose name was not revealed - would have remained at home with her victims for about 24 hours until the police received the call for help.

The same source reported that all the small victims were under 10 years of age and that the woman's husband was approximately 30 years old. Neighbors from the home where the crime occurred claimed that the family had moved to the neighborhood just a month ago and that the suspect appeared to be depressed over the recent death of her father.

"What makes a person take the life of such young children and their husband is something we will never understand," says part of the police statement. “This is a horrendous crime not only for the victims, but also for the family in general, the neighbors and the community. We are hopeful and pray that the remaining victim will survive their injuries and make a full recovery.”

The woman is reportedly in custody but no charges have yet been brought against her.
