The family of a Swiss couple who disappeared three-quarters of a century ago finally have an answer to those who passed a distant day in 1942 when they went out to guard the cattle.

The surprisingly well-preserved corpses were discovered last Thursday in a glacier in the Swiss Alps along with personal effects such as a backpack, a bottle and a book, according to the Swiss newspaper Le Matin.

The last time Marcelin and Francine Dumoulin had been known was on August 15, 1942, when they went out to tend the cattle on the slopes of the mountains surrounding the town of Chandolin.

The husbands of 40 and 37 years had 7 children, who were orphaned after their disappearance, and were separated and distributed among the family. However, they never stopped looking for their parents and even made several expeditions with local authorities.

But it was nature that 75 years later exposed the mummified bodies, preserved by ice, on the Tsanfleuron glacier, 2,615 meters above Les Diablerets, a town popular for its ski resort.

It was a worker from the Glacier 3000 company, which operates tourism deals and the cable car in that area, who made the surprising discovery.

The bodies were lying close to each other. They are a man and a woman who wore clothing that dated from the Second World War period,”said the director of that company, Bernhard Tschannen.

On the reason that led to the death of the couple, it is believed that they died after falling into a crack in the glacier, where they were buried in the ice.

The family, now making preparations to pay them the last tribute, never stopped looking for them, said their youngest daughter, Marceline Udry-Dumoulin, now 79.

"We knew that one day we could give them the funeral they deserve," he said. "I will go dressed in white, the color of hope that I always had."
