The designer behind the popular American brand BCBGMAXAZRIA, died this past Monday, May 6, in a hospital in Houston, Texas, as reported by WWD.com. The artist was 70 years old and reportedly suffered from lung cancer, which is believed to have caused his death.
Max Azria was born in Tunisia and lived more than a decade in Paris before moving to the United States, and in 1989 launched the BCBGMAXAZRIA brand, which later became a favorite of many celebrities. In fact, the company grew so much that it even had around 500 stores around the world and most of the major department stores also sold the brand.
To stay current and to please a younger generation, in 2008 the designer launched his BCBGGeneration line and appointed his eldest daughter Joyce as creative director.
However, at the time of his death Azria was no longer the owner of the brand he created and made popular so popular. In 2016 he left the company, which at that time was already facing financial problems. Even in 2017 it filed for bankruptcy and was acquired by the Marquee company.
The brand has since recovered and is now extremely popular, in part because of how it has innovated its designs with stylist Kate Young as creative director, without taking away the essence of the founder.
The designer is survived by his wife and six children.
Rest in peace!
