Did you know that Kat Von D's parents are Argentine and that she was born in Mexico? As you read it. The makeup artist has many more faces than those seen in the tattoo program with which she rose to fame, behind the gothic look and air of a tough girl of this Montemorelos girl hides a sweet and familiar person who divides her time between protect animal rights, do tattoos and run a multi-million dollar makeup firm.

We interviewed her in Los Angeles on the occasion of the relaunch of her perfumes and this is what we discovered about her. Do not miss it.

Ten years have passed since you created the Saint and Sinner fragrances, what has made you relaunch them now?

So it was a limited edition and people went crazy. Until today they kept asking me to come back. The perfumes are identical, yes, but I think I have grown a lot as an artist in those ten years and I wanted to make the design more current and [reflective] more like I am now.

How are you in intimacy?

Most people would be surprised to know that I have a softer side. They know me for the tattoos, the makeup, the black color, but deep down I am the most romantic and soft person you could meet. That's what is nice about duality, being a hard candy on the outside and soft on the inside.

How would you describe these perfumes?

Saint is not that it is for prude or scared girls, it is your softest, most romantic side. With Sinner I feel like I can eat the world, go into a meeting and raze.

How do you think being a Latina has influenced your career?

Very much! Throughout my life people assumed that I am only white and part of me is frustrated because I would not be who I am if it were not because I grew up in this culture. I always say that I am Latina, but I have a stronger connection to Mexico, where I was born. There is a visual richness in that culture that inspires me a lot and can be seen in my work.

Is it true that Selena Quintanilla is one of the artists who has influenced you the most?

Selena had a very important role in my childhood. When we moved here only my father spoke English, my mother was the last to learn and Selena's crossover album helped her tremendously. We listened to it all the time, I know all the songs by heart. Selena broke that barrier, she was American, she was born here and she probably spoke Spanish worse than me, but people adored her and also in a world where Latinas were not so commercial, having such a great, talented and young idol … She also exuded charisma and kindness, I have never heard or read anyone speak ill of her.

What idea of beauty do you want to convey with your brand?

That you don't need makeup. We give you tools to inspire you to try new things because you love them.

Halloween is coming, what has been your best costume?

Everyone assumes that I'm going to be good at it and the truth is that I don't do much that day. I once went to a party dressed up as the host, Kerry King (leader of the trash metsal Slayer nanda), who is bald and has a huge beard. I don't like sexy costumes.
