The coronavirus is skewing lives left and right in the city of Guayaquil, the epicenter of the terrible crisis that Covid-19 has unleashed in Ecuador. The dead multiply without ceasing and their bodies are left in the middle of the streets, wrapped in plastic. It is an overwhelming reality: its almost three million inhabitants do not know what to do with the deceased.

Funeral homes are full, hospitals have many unclaimed victims, and the lack of tests means that no one knows how many lives the pandemic is actually claiming. Although the country confirmed less than three thousand infected and less than a hundred dead, municipal offices say that in the last few days alone they have collected 400, according to the Los Angeles Times newspaper.

Mayor Cynthia Viteri, who announced that she tested positive for coronavirus herself, said the government is the one who has to take responsibility for collecting the deceased. "They abandon them in the villages, they drop dead in front of the hospitals, nobody wants to take care of them," he assured.

Héctor Galarza, a publicist from Guayaquil, said for his part that it was very possible that the people found dead on the street are destitute and that these images are causing panic.

Lawyer Juan Carlos Freire said that frustration among the people is increasing: "They are asking someone from the authorities to take care of the bodies, but the lack of response ends with them lying in the central streets of Guayaquil."

Today, the mayor confirmed that the corpses are currently being piled in three large refrigerated containers, while the construction of a cemetery for them, a mass grave where they can receive a Christian burial, is planned.
