A one-year-old baby died after being forgotten inside a hot car in North Carolina. Her foster mother was "shocked" to see authorities trying to revive the baby after rescuing him from inside the car where she had forgotten him for several hours after leaving for work. Dawn Aberson-Vanden Broecke, 42, had planned to drop the baby off at daycare on the way to work but left him in his tethered seat and went to work around 10 am

The foster mother returned to her car around 5 pm with the idea of looking for the baby in the nursery but realized that the boy was still in the car and stopped in a parking lot to see how it was, according to the police report. When the boy didn't respond, she called 911.

According to the police report, the woman "showed no emotion" when officers tried to revive the baby, but Lt. Corey Copley of the Pinesville Police Department told PEOPLE: "I imagine she was in shock. I was clearly affected. " Copley added that the foster mother has cooperated at all times with the investigation.

PEOPLE confirmed that the boy died from exposure to heat, the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner's Office reported. Broecke turned himself in to authorities Wednesday as agreed, and is in police custody at the Mecklenburg County Jail. The case is still ongoing.
