The highest court in Costa Rica ruled that same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. Given this, the homosexual community considers the event as a victory. After the verdict, the Supreme Court gave an 18-month period for legislators to release a law that endorses this new provision.
This resolution was also applauded by the new president of this nation, Carlos Alvarado, who publicly promoted rights in favor of said community. He even promised to comply with the judicial decree.
"Our commitment to total equality remains intact," Alvarado mentioned on his Twitter account. "We will continue to promote actions that guarantee that no person will face discrimination based on their sexual orientation or gender identity."
Last January, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR), the highest organ of rights in the Americas based in Costa Rica, made a similar ruling, warning that the member countries of its organization should grant the same rights to couples of the same sex, which included the possibility of getting married.
"We know it will be an 18-month struggle, but the battle has already been won," Marco Castillo, a lawyer and leader of the LBGT Diversity Movement's rights group, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. "It will end with an equal marriage in Costa Rica."
Although this decision is irreversible, the law is expected to meet strong opposition among religious groups as well as conservative lawmakers.
