A 55-year-old Spanish woman died after undergoing an acupuncture session with bees. The Journal of Investigational Allergology and Clinical Immunology reported that the woman began to gasp and passed out after being stung by a bee.

Apitherapy - as this practice is also known - is an alternative therapy for pain relief that has become popular. Even celebrities like actress Gwyneth Paltrow have undergone this treatment - which according to the American Apitherapy Association - can help treat burns, tendonitis, infections and multiple sclerosis, among other conditions.

The woman - whose name has not been released - was under treatment for stress and muscle stiffness. Although she had been treating apitherapy once a month for two years, during this session she had a violent allergic reaction to the bee venom that killed her.

The report adds that the ambulance took about 30 minutes to arrive at the alternative medicine clinic and transfer her to the hospital in Madrid, where she received intramuscular adrenaline to counteract the poison. Unfortunately, a CT scan performed in the hospital confirmed that he had suffered a stroke and in the next few weeks died of multiple organ failure.

According to studies, very few cases of acupuncture allergies to bees have been reported and most have occurred in countries such as China or Korea, where alternative medicine is more widely practiced.
