A 60-year-old Army veteran in Florida was shot dead on Veterans Day after he apparently stopped to help a stranger who was having trouble with the car.
According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, detectives believe Carlos Cruz Echevarría was shot dead Saturday near his home in Deltona, after he offered to help a man trying to get a car out of a ditch. The veteran reportedly offered to bring his truck to help him pull the vehicle, but in the process, the individual shot him, stole his truck, and fled.
The Good Samaritan was found dead in the ditch near the car, which investigators later determined had been stolen, just before 8 p.m.
Mike Chitwood, the sheriff in charge, asked for the collaboration of anyone who knows anything about this crime: "We owe it to Mr. Cruz and his family: to find the, or the murderers, who took his life in cold blood so ruthlessly"
As investigators try to link the clues to the whereabouts of Cruz's killer, Chitwood added: “It takes a special kind of evil to shoot a stranger who is just trying to help you. And anyone who knows something and does not say it, is complicit in this very heinous act.”
It was also reported that there is a reward of $ 10,000 for any clue that leads to the murderer.
