The name of the nun María Valentina de los Ángeles has become one of the most popular these days in Colombia, as she will be one of the people in charge of welcoming Pope Francis to the South American country with her talent, rare among the religious: sing rap.
That's right, oddly enough, the sister and her hip-hop will be part of the procession that will receive the high pontiff during his visit to the cities of Bogotá, Medellín, Villavicencio and Cartagena between September 6 and 10.
"The cool thing about rap is that it is something that stays very easy in the head and when it has the depth of a truth that is Christ, it is even more striking," the sister shared in conversation with the AFP news agency.
The peculiar style of the 28-year-old nun was unveiled in 2016 during her participation in the reality show A otro nivel del Canal Caracol. Her vocal talent led her to be invited by a group of musicians known as United Catholic Musicians (MCU) to participate in the song “Demos el primer paso”.
As reported by the Colombian newspaper El Espectador through its online site, the nun earned the privilege of receiving the pope after her theme with MCU was chosen as the official hymn of the visit of the leader of the Catholic Church.
“My dream as music is to be a good religious and making music is second. I want to record more and I want people to fall in love with Jesus more than falling in love with my voice”, added María Valentina.
