Pope Francis publicly apologized for "losing patience" with one of the pilgrims who took his hand while greeting some of the faithful present in St. Peter's Square on New Year's Eve.

In the video it is seen when a woman grabs the pontiff's hand and abruptly pulls it towards her. The pope, visibly surprised and annoyed, reacts by suppressing her and slapping her twice.

“Many times we lose patience; Me too, and I apologize for yesterday's bad example. Therefore, looking at the manger we see, with the eyes of faith, the renewed world, freed from the dominion of evil and placed under the royal lordship of Christ, the child lying in the manger, said the pope while praying the Angelus in solemnity of the Virgin Mary.

The highest representative of the Catholic Church urged those present to come down "from the pedestals of our pride" and ask for the blessing of the Mother of God so that "we are blessed, we open our hearts to his goodness."

When offering the traditional mass on the first day of the year in St. Peter's Basilica, the pope referred to the dignity of women and condemned all kinds of violence, humiliation and disgrace against her. He assured that women must be respected and honored for being the "noblest meat in the world".

"Salvation for humanity came from the body of a woman: how we treat the body of the woman we understand our level of humanity," he added in the homily in which Catholics commemorate the solemnity of Mary Most Holy Mother of God.
