A high school teacher in South Carolina has become the center of controversy over alleged comments she made that embarrassed some of her students.

Students at Stratford High, in the town of Goose Creek, reported to parents that Heather Taylor asked them not to wear leggings if they were not "size 0 or 2".

The ninth and tenth grade teacher announcement was recorded and sent to the local WCBD television station.

"I told you before and I will tell you now: unless you are a size zero or two, if you wear something like that, even if you are not fat, you look fat," the teacher is heard in the audio broadcast by the station.

The teacher's comment caused great discomfort from parents, including Lacy Thompson-Harper, mother of an eleventh-grader who spoke out on Facebook.

"Embarrassing someone by their body is unnecessary and unprofessional," said the woman in the post, who was later removed from the social platform. "When I spoke to her, she turned the matter around saying excuse after excuse," added the woman. "Students have mocked my daughter's body and she shouldn't be subject to this by her teachers."

"I am so sorry," the teacher said Friday in a statement sent to People. "I have learned a lesson."

“I met with each of the Stratford High classes,” the teacher continued. “And I told them from the bottom of my heart that my intention was not to hurt anyone or offend my students in any way. I assured them that I am one of their greatest admirers and that I bet on their future.”
