James T. Hodkingson, a follower of progressive Senator Bernie Sanders and an enemy of President Donald Trump with a history of violence, was responsible for the shooting that wounded Republican Congressman Steve Scalise and three other people playing baseball in an Alexandria park, Virginia.
The 66-year-old man was shot dead after two Capitol police officers who accompanied Scalise, who is the Republican majority leader in the House of Congress and therefore has a security team, responded to him.

Hodkingson, who had worked as a home inspector, was publicly critical of Trump and the Republican Party, whom he accused of favoring the wealthy at the expense of other citizens. "Trump is a traitor," he said in a message on Facebook.
He was also a volunteer in Senator Sanders' presidential campaign, who contested the Democratic primary for Hillary Clinton. "This despicable act makes me nauseous," said the independent Vermont legislator. "Violence of any kind is unacceptable."
