A whole Christmas miracle happened Wednesday in Virginia when three family members who had been trapped in an abandoned coal mine were rescued after spending four days underground.

Kayla Williams, 25, Erica Treadway, 31, and Cody Beverly, 21, went missing on Saturday. Her abandoned ATV was later found near the entrance to the Elk Run Coal Rock House Powellton mine in Clear Creek, the Office of Miners Health, Safety and Training said in a statement obtained by the Associated Press.

A fourth member of the group, Eddie Williams, 43, was able to find his way out on Monday and point authorities to his location, ABC News reported. On Tuesday, rescue workers cleared standing water in the caves through water pumps and installed large fans to bring fresh air to the mines to keep the group alive.

Authorities said the four went to the cave in search of copper wire, a "lucrative product in a financially depressed region of the state," ABC reported. They entered the abandoned mine through a small vent on the side of the mountain called the "drill hole," said the Raleigh County Sheriff's Office lieutenant.

"It is a Christmas blessing," West Virginia Governor Jim Justice told reporters, the Washington Post reported. "This is a result that I really, seriously, didn't think would happen in my heart."

The Elk Run Coal Rock House Powellton mine has been idle for nearly two years, NBC News reported. A sheriff's spokesman told the agency that entering an abandoned mine is illegal.
