James Hodgkinson, the man responsible for the shooting that this week left Republican Congressman Steve Calise and three other people playing baseball in an Alexandria, Virginia park, had adopted a teenager about ten years ago - a young woman who committed suicide in a horrifying way..
According to The Daily Mail newspaper, in mid-1996 Hodgkinson and his wife adopted a young girl named Wanda Ashley Stock, whom they enrolled in a high school near their home.
Just two months after classes started, the girl, who had already turned 17, killed herself by soaking herself in gasoline, locking herself in her car by the side of a street and setting herself on fire.
However, everything seems to indicate that the adoptive parents had nothing to do with her wishes to end her life since, before arriving at that home, she had already attempted suicide. The unfortunate young woman, whom her adoptive father had described as a "very practical girl," was born in 1979 and had spent her life in foster homes since 1984 until she finally arrived at the Hodgkinson's home.
Yesterday the gunman's widow , Suzanne Hodgkinson, gave an impromptu press conference in which she asked reporters to leave her alone. In it, she stated that she had no idea what her 30-year-old husband was going to do and apologized for the tragedy he caused on the baseball field.
