After a very hectic day, it seems that France has chosen its president. With 65% of the votes, according to the newspaper EL PAÍS, the centrist Emmanuel Macron becomes the new leader of the country.
France has said no to the extremist right of Marine Le Pen, an ally of US President Donald Trump and Russian Vladimir Putin. An alliance that has cost him dearly and that has left him with just 35% of the votes.
The fierce struggle for the presidency has been marked by an electoral campaign full of reproaches and accusations. Fear of Le Pen's authoritarian proposals has made Macron's victory the most extensive in the country's history since Jack Chirac over Jean-Marie Le Pen, Marine's father, in 2002.
Despite this, the French have not voted in a massive way in this second round and abstention has been 25%, the lowest figure since 1969.
Leaders from around the world have not waited to congratulate France's new leader, as has a long list of celebrities. His victory represents a breath of fresh air compared to Le Pen, who has had the old continent on edge and whose defeat has left a clear feeling of relief.
Emmanuel, a former liberal banker, thus becomes the eighth president of the Fifth Republic and his position will be made official this week in a series of official acts where the current ruler Francois Holland will transfer his powers.
These elections have been marked by rigorous security measures due to the state of emergency in which the country finds itself after the latest terrorist attacks. Despite the odd scare for suspicious packages, the day ended without incident and with a fairly general contentment from the people and Europe.
