What was a joyous winter game, building a snow castle, became a tragedy for two children in Greenwich, New York, when they were buried and one of them lost his life.

The first to raise the alarm was the sister of one of them, Tyler Day, who when she did not return home called the emergency service.

The police came with rescue dogs that followed the trail of the minors to a place where trucks deposit the snow that is removed from the streets and public spaces. The children had been playing there digging tunnels and building walls until they were buried, authorities said.

Greenwich Police Chief George Bell told local media that his entire team immediately mobilized to rescue Day, 12, and his friend Joshua Demarest, 13.

They first found Joshua unconscious, whose death was certified soon after at a nearby hospital. Tyler was luckier because an air pocket had formed around him and allowed him to breathe during the hours they were buried. He is currently being treated at the hospital for hypothermia.

Investigations by authorities suggest that the boys were buried when a truck dumped their load of snow, which was then inadvertently pushed into the area where the children were playing.

Demarest's family received another terrible news that same Tuesday, since the boy's grandmother also died that same day.
