In love with the undeniable charm of San Miguel de Allende, in Mexico, a Chicago family settled there after a vacation and decided to create a luxury fashion brand that fused the region's artisan traditions with the most chic European sophistication. Michael and Lisa Coleman, along with their son, Charlie, and their daughter-in-law, Julia Sloan, were inspired by the traditional Mexican serape, a piece halfway between the poncho and the blanket, to create Recreo San Miguel.

"The idea was to reinterpret an iconic piece [of Mexican culture] and elevate it stylistically with luxurious materials," explains Michael.

"[The serape] is a very special garment: it is versatile, great for traveling, it is like a workhorse in your wardrobe," says Julia, the person in charge of the design part of the brand. "It is comfortable, but it does not lack glamor, it does not lack impact effect."

These unique pieces are made by hand in a very special workshop in the Mineral de Pozos locality. “They are a family of 9 sisters and 5 work with us. They dedicate a lot of time and energy to each piece. They are like family. [Working with] local communities and offering them other opportunities is one of the most beautiful parts of our work.”

"Recess is time to enjoy and have fun and that is what our clothes represent," Sloan says of the name they chose to baptize their line with. "It's great for those times when you're having a good time, enjoying life, letting go and smiling … and you're just happy!"
