Celebrities love the accessories of this brand that has become a cult phenomenon that invades all Instagram. From Chrissy Teigen to Jessica Alba and a host of influencers and models have appeared on the networks with some of the bags of Cult Gaia, the Los Angeles firm created by Jasmin Larian just 6 years ago. Learn about its success story and the keys to the most fashionable style of the moment.
How did you get started in the fashion world?
I studied in New York at the FIT fashion school and I did an internship at Jason Wu. I was simultaneously working on a nightwear brand and making flower wreaths to get extra money out of it. The crown business started to take off and led me to create Cult Gaia. My mother was a fashion designer and an artist and my father invented Bratz dolls, so I was always exposed to fashion.
How have these six years of meteoric career been for your firm?
It was something like an accident that ended up becoming what Cult Gaia is today. I started making flower crowns for fun and vintage turbans for friends with vintage fabrics that I had collected over the years for friends and people would stop them on the street to ask where they had bought it for them. They began to become objects of worship. During this time I was also working on sketches for a clothing line, but the demand for crowns and turbans was so high that I ended up making a website that in the end was the beginning of Cult Gaia.
And at what moment did the most wanted bag on the Internet appear?
In 2014, I launched the Ark Bag which is really what put us on the map. It did not take off immediately because it was such a unique piece that people had never seen and were not quite sure how to carry it. Social media changed things because that is where a massive audience could see how to take it, influencers loved it and taught it to their followers and the brand really grew from there. Since those first days we have expanded and ventured into other categories such as fashion and shoes.
After the success of your previous releases. What inspired you to create your new collection?
This collection is somewhat more sophisticated and really elegant for women. My goal is to grow with our type of woman. Everything is made of super rich materials and precious colored gems. Everything is classic, clean and sexy, but not obvious.
What is your favorite piece from the collection?
I love our new brass Lilleth bag. I think it is the perfect evening bag. I also love our silk and velvet models, it is a delight to wear them and they feel great for the figure.
You use vintage fabrics and recycled materials for your designs, where do you get them?
I have a fairly extensive library that I have been collecting over the years. I hate wasting and throwing away, so I make sure to use materials even from our past collections.
What does sustainability mean to you and how do you apply it to your brand?
We use a lot of bamboo in our designs. Bamboo is very strong and versatile and grows like a grass so it is a source of renewable resources. It allows us to make endless shapes and different styles.
