Dani Hopkins, from Washington, became a mother on September 22 when she gave birth to her first-born Taylor. The 30-year-old mother but only spent about 15 minutes with her newborn at Multicare Valley Hospital when an emergency arose.

"The doctor said, 'She is bleeding to death,'" Hopkins tells PEOPLE. “Suddenly the room where I, the doctor, the nurse, my husband and the baby were, filled with 8 or 10 nurses and another doctor. They were all around me."

According to the doctors, the new mother had several lacerations in the birth canal, which caused her to bleed. The mother bled for two hours. Hopkins says she tried to stay calm during those times of crisis but didn't know how her story would end.

I did think I was going to die. I remember lying there thinking, 'So am I going to die?' I was sad because I did not want my husband to be a single father, it saddened me to think that I would not see my baby grow up. I felt like I was floating on top of myself, watching it all go by.”

As doctors tried to save Hopkins' life, her husband Bobby, 30, and her newborn daughter waited at the other end of the hospital room. Bobby also didn't think her husband would survive.

"He was very scared," says Hopkins about her husband. “When we talked about it later, he told me that he saw blood coming out of me without stopping. It was the scariest thing.”

The mother required 100 stitches to stop the bleeding. Once the crisis was over, the parents hugged each other and cried with joy when she was with her baby again.

"I didn't know something like this could happen," admits Hopkins, who is still recovering from the injury after two months. “I still don't feel quite right. It is difficult to stop, if I stop for a long time it hurts a lot. I already went to the check-up with the doctor, but it was still very swollen so they could check me up.”

According to his doctors it can take a year for him to heal completely. Hopkins appreciates the help of her husband taking care of the baby during her first month of life, since the mother was almost unable to move. Her 7-week-old daughter is her greatest source of strength. "I feel like I was born to be a mom," concludes Hopkins. "[Taylor] completes me, I've never been happier."
