A Maryland-resident couple was found dead inside their room at a luxurious hotel in La Romana, in the Dominican Republic. Edward Nathaniel Holmes, 63, and Cynthia Ann Day, 49, were found this Thursday by staff at the Bahia Principe Hotel after they did not show up to checkout at the time indicated by the establishment.

An autopsy revealed that the couple died as a result of respiratory failure and pulmonary edema caused by excess fluid in the lungs. as indicated by Frank Félix Durán Mejía, spokesman for the National Police of the Dominican Republic in an official statement.

Yuberkis Rosario Santana, prosecutor of the province and Mary Santana, medical doctor attached to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF, for its acronym in English), were in charge of lifting the bodies of the hotel.

According to a preliminary report issued by the province's attorney, the bodies showed no signs of violence, however both deaths will be investigated, according to local sources.

Likewise, the police have confirmed that there were several medications in the couple's room to treat high blood pressure. Relatives of the couple told WBAL station that Day and Holmes were engaged to be married.

For his part, Francisco Romero, director of the aforementioned hotel, told the authorities that the deceased had registered at the establishment on May 25 and that, according to his registration, his departure was scheduled for the 30th of the same month.

"We are deeply saddened by the incident at one of our hotels in La Romana, Dominican Republic," said spokespersons for the Bahía Príncipe hotels in a press release. "We want to express our deepest condolences to his family and friends."

The couple resided in Prince George's County and had a scheduled flight to return home the day they were found dead.
