Mónica Ivonne Domínguez, a woman from South Texas, was sentenced this Friday to ten years in prison after pleading guilty to the abuse of the body of her 2-year-old daughter in a case that shocked public opinion.

In September 2015, the woman and her husband, Gerardo Zavala Laredo, 32, were detained in Laredo after finding that their 9-month-old son had multiple fractures in his arms and legs. The woman pleaded guilty to abuse and in December 2016 she was sentenced by judge Óscar J. Hale to ten years on probation.

In that instance, the woman was ordered not to commit more crimes, to abstain from the use of controlled substances and to pay a fine, in addition to completing 500 hours of community service.

On February 14, 2019, while still on probation, the Laredo police discovered the remains of his daughter Rebecka Domínguez, 2, submerged in a container filled with acid. The remains were hidden in a closet in the apartment occupied by the woman with her husband.

A subsequent investigation determined that the girl had drowned in the bathtub and that to cover her death, the couple disposed of the body. The woman corroborated the version when questioned. Dominguez, 37, was charged with abuse, endangering the life of a minor, and tampering with a dead body, according to the Webb County Sheriff's Office, where the case was being pursued.

According to multiple local media outlets, Domínguez's husband allowed his wife to be close to the minor and her brothers, despite the woman's "starts" and alcohol and drug abuse.

Isidro Alanís, Webb County District Attorney, asked the judge to revoke the woman's probation, who repeatedly violated the restrictions to which she was subjected.

Domínguez has a long criminal history that dates back to 1999 and includes 18 arrests on 25 different charges, according to Laredo police files, LPD.

One of the most recent incidents occurred in December 2017 when she was arrested for driving while intoxicated and for which the woman pleaded guilty and was once again conditionally released.

Domínguez's lawyers declined to discuss the case, as the woman has other pending charges that could add more time to the sentence that she must serve in a state prison.
