More than 600 university officials from across the United States have joined together to call on President Donald Trump to end the DACA program, which protects hundreds of thousands of so-called DREAMers from deportation.
The mandate of Consideration of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) has allowed these undocumented youths who came to this country as minors to come out of the shadows.
Among them are outstanding students who shone at their local colleges and now hold positions at such renowned institutions as Harvard, MIT, and UC Berkeley. One of these young people is Karina Aguilar Guerrero, who entered the country at just 3 years old and is currently in her second year at the prestigious Princeton University, the alma mater of Michelle Obama, with the purpose of later specializing in educational policy.
After years of uncertainty about her immigration status, Karina was able to breathe when President Barack Obama launched the DACA program in 2012 through an executive order that gave legal protection to undocumented immigrants due to Congress's refusal to approve the DREAM Act, the proposal of law that would give them legal residence.
