A 14-year-old teenager died in the town of Lovington, NM, while taking her cell phone while showering.

Madison Coe's grandmother confirmed in an interview that the girl died electrocuted when she grabbed the cell phone from the shower, which was charging. "There was a burn mark on the hand, the hand that would have grabbed the phone," Donna O'Guinn told the local NBC channel. "It was very obvious what happened."

Coe, who was visiting her father's house when she passed away last Sunday, had recently graduated from Terra Vista Middle School in Lubbock, Texas, where she played basketball and played the tuba.

"With broken hearts we mourn the loss of Madison Coe," officials in the school district where he had studied said in a statement. "We wish to convey our sincere condolences to her family and friends."

Madison planned to attend a high school in Houston, where her family planned to move, the NBC affiliate reported.

O'Guinn said his granddaughter's death should serve as a warning about the danger of taking the cell phone everywhere. "This is a tragedy that does not have to happen to anyone else," he said.
