They Confiscate Alcohol Cancun Playa Del Carmen

The Mexican authorities are falling hard to eradicate the appearance of adulterated alcohol and that is lashing the ports of Cancun and Playa del Carmen, in the Mexican Caribbean. The problem was uncovered earlier this year after the serious poisoning of two Michigan teenagers that cost one of their lives.

At a press conference, J. Sánchez y Tépoz and Enrique de la Madrid, of the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) announced the seizure of more than 10,000 gallons of alcoholic beverages with sanitary irregularities.

Officials said the captured alcohol was ready for consumption at various tourist spots in the Caribbean port and Cancun. In total, the sanitary operation added 200 joint operations.

Among the inspected resorts and nightclubs are five hotels of the Iberostar chain in Mexico, owner of the Iberostar Paraíso del Mar hotel, where Abbey Conner, 20, and her brother, Austin, 22, were found unconscious and floating in the pool after taking "shots" with strangers.

This case led to a deep investigation by the Winsconsin Journal Sentinel that uncovered other similar cases where people had suffered different discomforts after consuming alcoholic beverages in Playa del Carmen and Cancun.

"In recent days, the Mexican health and consumer authorities, Cofepris and Profeco, have carried out routine inspections at five Iberostar hotels in Mexico, examining 43 bars and restaurants located in them," a spokeswoman for People en Español told Iberostar, by means of a statement. “As a result of the inspections, only minor sanitary incidents were detected (…) in the lobby bar of the Iberostar Paraíso Maya hotel, so it was temporarily closed. It should be clarified that, in no way, were these incidents related to the supply of adulterated alcoholic beverages”, it was pointed out to clarify that said closure was not part of the operation regarding adulterated beverages. The Iberostar Paraíso Maya hotel is located in the Iberostar Paraíso hotel complex,like Iberostar Paraíso del Mar.

"We work diligently to resolve these incidents, and we expect a future evaluation in the coming days with the aim of proceeding to reopen the bar," the document said.
