The heinous case of the rape of a 31-year-old woman has stolen the attention of the Memphis city community in the state of Tennessee, as it took authorities 16 years to find the person responsible for the terrible crime, despite the fact that in the recovered evidence they had the name of the culprit.

The unusual event occurred in August 2001, when the victim was walking alone through an industrial area of the city. Thomas Maupin, the perpetrator of the assault, quietly followed her and then attacked her and stabbed her in the face with a short sharp object.

According to a report shared by The Washington Post online site, the metal object would have pierced from the bottom of the jaw to the top of the young woman's mouth. Helpless and injured, Maupin forced her to perform oral sex on him.

The police allegedly opened the scene of the crime, finding some pieces of evidence of the sexual assault, including a box of teeth. All the evidence was kept by the authorities in charge of the investigation. 16 years after the horrendous event and with the case still unsolved, it was discovered that the piece of false teeth had a name inscribed, which could be the key to finding the person responsible.

Thomas Maupin, 67, then became the prime suspect in the rape. It was not enough to confirm the criminal past of the man, who had already been in prison for having murdered a small girl of only 6 years old.

Last week, the man pleaded guilty to the rape and was sentenced to 8 years in prison.
