The bodies of six children and three adults were recovered in the Payson area of Arizona after the family was swept away by a flash flood while swimming in a stream.

The tragedy happened when more than a dozen members of the Hispanic family were celebrating a birthday in the stream of Cold Springs, in a wooded area. Suddenly, an avalanche of ash-blackened waters from an upstream forest fire was allowed to come over the stream where the group was swimming, dragging them all.

The victims were identified as María Raya, who was celebrated and was turning 26; her children Emily, Mía and Héctor Daniel Garnica, 3, 5 and 7 years old, respectively; his mother, Selia García, 60 years old; the brothers of the birthday girl, Maribel Raya and Javier Raya, 24 and 14 years old, respectively; and Erika Raya, 2 years old, daughter of Maribel. The ninth victim is Jonathan León, 13, Garcia's grandson.
