Chelsea Clinton, who became a mother last September to a girl, Charlotte, talks to us about the importance of talking, reading, and singing to our baby during an exclusive interview for People in which she appears alongside Sesame Street character Elmo.

"My husband Marc and I read Charlotte every night, and when her grandparents are visiting, they also read to her," she shares.

“It is very important that children, and children of Charlotte's age, are read to, spoken to, and sung to. It helps their brains develop, she adds.

The 34-year-old mom, who recently rejoined her position as vice president of the Clinton Foundation, hopes to spread the idea that talking is teaching through a collaboration between her foundation's initiative, Too Small To Fail, Sesame's workshop Street and Text4baby, with which they offer valuable advice and links to video tutorials.

"I start talking to Charlotte since I changed her diaper in the morning and when I choose what clothes to wear during the day," says Clinton.

“I read the news to him in the morning. Now he agrees with everything I say, he adds.

"We all 'compete' to see who reads stories to Charlotte," says Clinton. Her mother, Hillary, also sings to her granddaughter. "I love to see how she sings to her," says Chelsea.

For his part, former President Bill Clinton enjoys strolling with his granddaughter down the hallway of his daughter's New York apartment, showing Charlotte the books on the shelf.
