The Georgia mother accused of stabbing her husband and four of her five children to death was happy and even smiled at her first court appearance, where she was seen giving the OK sign with her thumbs.

Isabel Martinez, 33, told Gwinnett County Magistrate Michael Thorpe last Friday that she does not want to be represented by any attorney on charges of killing her husband, Martin Romero, 33, and four of her children: Isabela Martínez, 10; Dacota Romero, 7; Dillan Romero, 4; and Axel Romero, 2.

Martinez wagged his finger in front of the judge and shook his head saying "no" as Thorpe listed the charges against him, including five counts of murder and malicious murder, along with six other counts of aggravated assault, according to the Associated Press.

The judge asked the defendant to behave and stop acting in front of the cameras.

According to ABC News, Martinez said in his turn to speak that the people and their faith would be his lawyer, despite the fact that the judge advised him to hire a lawyer or to allow her to be named as his defender. In the end the court appointed Robert Greenwald to represent her.

The only survivor of the massacre was little Diana, 9, who is still hospitalized and is the only witness to what happened.

The first reports of the crime indicated that Martínez remained locked up in his home in the town of Loganville for at least 24 hours with the bodies of his alleged victims before the police came to the scene after receiving a call.

So far it is not clear what the motive for the murders may have been, but a neighbor told CNN that Martínez had been acting strangely for several days after losing his father.
