The case of Karol Sánchez - the teenager who was reported missing by the New York Police Department (NYPD) - has taken an unexpected turn. According to authorities, the 16-year-old girl - who was found Tuesday and has already been reunited with her family - was the one who orchestrated her own kidnapping. "Karol Sánchez has been located in the Bronx. She is safe and undamaged,”NYPD shared on Twitter on Tuesday. "Thank you to everyone in the community for attending."

A source revealed to PEOPLE that it had all been a montage of the teenager, since she did not want to return to her native Honduras with her family and wanted to remain in the United States. The New York Daily News reports that the alleged "kidnappers" were friends of Karol, who appeared Tuesday afternoon on Eagle Avenue and East 156th Street in the Bronx, the same place where she had allegedly been kidnapped.

The young woman disappeared on December 16, causing many people to worry about her well-being and pray for her return home. On Tuesday, Dominican-born rapper Cardi B shared an Amber Alert that was issued by New York police asking for help to rescue Karol. According to the alert, the young woman had been kidnapped by four African-American men on Monday night while walking through the Bronx with her mother. A security video shows how the teenager was forcibly mounted in a beige car and her mother was thrown to the ground when she tried to stop them.

Fortunately, the case did not end in tragedy. The New York Times reported that Karol confessed to police that she had planned the false kidnapping because she was "unhappy" and wanted to flee her "overprotective" mother. The case remains under investigation.
