Leslie Oquendo, a young Puerto Rican 'XY', was moved by her story when she auditioned for Nuestra Belleza Latina. The Puerto Rican, who is one of the contestants on the reality show this year, spoke with Dr. Juan Rivera in Despierta América (Univisión) about what it means to be a 'XY woman'.

Oquendo went public with his androgenic insensitivity syndrome (SIA) on the NBL stage, surprising the jury with his testimony.

Usually the fetus when it is developing in the womb of the mother, people with my syndrome develops the fetus in men but the androgens do not get a good grip on the body and it begins to feminize so it develops what is the parts and everything else of a woman”, he told Despierta América.

Rivera added that although she is a woman, she had been genetically born as a man. "I do not have any female reproductive organs [ovaries, fallopian tubes or uterus]," she added, clarifying that she is not menstruating, nor can she be a biological mother. "Sometimes it does hurt but the important thing is that other people who have this syndrome can hear it and do not feel alone."

Rivera clarified that Oquendo is neither hemaphrodite nor transgender. "I am a hundred percent woman, I feel like a woman," she said. "I just don't have a woman's reproductive organs and I wasn't born with the vagina. Yes I was born with the vulva, I was not born with the vagina, so throughout my life I decided to have a vaginoplasty,”he said of a reconstructive surgery of the vagina that he underwent. The girl confessed that she is a virgin and has not yet had boyfriends. "I have spent 25 years of my life carrying this and that has also affected me in the relationships that I may have with a boy. Sometimes I have felt that I feel little because I cannot give children, because I am different”.

Oquendo reveals that he has had an emotional barrier when it comes to meeting couples. "I am willing to receive all the bullying, all the necessary criticism," she said of the price of her honesty on camera. "I want to educate people because there are many people like me, one child in 20,000 is born with this condition."

Oquendo said he wants to be a voice for other 'XY' people. Her parents always supported her and although they hid her condition when she was too young to understand it, they have been a source of strength. "I don't regret being born like this," he concludes. "This is my story, it is who I am."
