Amalia Andrade is one of Latin America's most prolific emerging writers and illustrators. Camila Saldarriaga is a stunning visual artist dedicated to embracing diversity and spotlighting social issues and female experiences in her work. Both Colombian women joined forces for the release of ¡Mais Duro!, a short film based on a story by Amalia. Written and directed by Camila Saldarriaga, the short film explores the sexual awakening and coming-of-age of a 13-year-old girl. The short film takes place in late '90s Colombia, amid escalating political warfare and violence.
The film has been presented at various film festivals, winning Best Short at the Nordic International Film Festival, and an honorable mention at the Provincetown Film Festival. The short has also been viewed at festivals in Colombia, Italy, Brazil, and the United States. Mais Duro! is more than a film - it serves as a window to a narrative that subverts heteronormativity. It brings young queer voices front and center.
In 2015, Amalia Andrade published One always changes the love of her life [for another love or another life] - whih translates to We Always Change The Love of Our Life (For Another Love or Another Life). S ince then, her work has been translated into various languages and published worldwide. After a painful breakup, Amalia took every moment from the healing process and translated it into writing and drawings, all beautifully anchored in love and humor. The memoir based in illustrations draws inspiration from Andrade's personal heartbreak, all intersected with her encyclopedic pop culture knowledge.
In Mais Duro !, we follow a journey of self-discovery. It challenges the sexual taboos that young people face, and shows how powerful it is to highlight their stories.
