Orange Coast College college baseball coach John Altobelli, daughter Alyssa and wife Keri died in the helicopter crash that cost former basketball player Kobe Bryant and daughter Gianna their lives on Sunday.

Gianna and Alyssa were teammates on the Mamba Academy team, flying from Orange County to Thousand Oaks to attend a game in which Bryant was to coach.
Kery and John Altobelli had two other children, Alexis and JJ, who were not traveling in the crashed helicopter and who are now facing the harsh news that they have lost their parents and sister.
Upon learning of his death, Altobelli was honored by the American Baseball Coaches Association in 2019 as ABCA / Diamond National Coach of the Year.
“We have lost a family member from [Orange County College] and our hearts are broken,” said College President Angélica Suárez. “Coach Altobelli was a giant on our campus, a dear teacher, coach, colleague, and friend. This is a tremendous loss for our university community.”
Brother Altobelli, Tony Altobelli, for his part, expressed the pain felt by the family. "I'm broken, I'm going to miss him very much," he told People. "He was my brother, he was my idol in childhood, he was also my idol as an adult."
In addition to the Bryant and Altobelli, the accident also claimed the life of Christina Mauser, an assistant basketball coach at the Orange County Private School.
"It's horrible," said Matt Mauser, husband of the late coach, on Monday on the Today Show (NBC). "It is awful. I have three young children, and I am trying to figure out how to navigate life with three children and without a mom.”
Sarah Chester and her daughter, Payton Chester, a high school student, also died in the accident, ESPN and CBS News reported.
A total of eight passengers, along with pilot Ara Zobayan, were traveling in the crashed helicopter on Sunday in Calabasas, CA, for reasons that are still unknown.
